ABSTRACT: This paper concerns the automatic transformation of programs
by transforming their synthesis proofs. This forms part of
an ongoing research effort at the University of Edinburgh
Department of Artificial Intelligence concerned with
tackling the demands on complexity, reliability, and
quantity of software by tackling the problems of automated
synthesis, verification and transformation of programs. The
author has implemented a program specialization and
optimization system: the OYSTER meta-level proof
transformation system (henceforth the OMTS). The main
applications of the proof transformations are the
optimization of recursive programs and the adaptation, or
specialization, of programs to special situations. The
transformations are correctness guaranteed and automatic
